8 best practices before you install an AI agent skill
Installing an AI skill is not like installing a harmless theme. You are often extending a control plane that can read data, reach services, and trigger real actions on your behalf.
Why this matters
- Start with supplier trust and provenance before you think about convenience or novelty.
- The most common agent failures come from supply-chain exposure, excessive permissions, and excessive autonomy.
- Dedicated runtimes, least privilege, and deterministic approvals do more for safety than elaborate prompt wording.
- AI agent deployment should be governed like any other security-sensitive platform, with inventory, patching, and review.
The three failure modes we look for first
OWASP's 2025 GenAI guidance is a useful mental model for skill review because it highlights three failure modes that repeatedly show up in real deployments: supply-chain weaknesses, excessive agency, and prompt injection. If a skill comes from an untrusted source, asks for broad access, and relies on the model to police itself, you already have most of the ingredients for a serious incident.
That is why responsible teams start with risk concentration, not feature lists. A skill that promises productivity but brings wide write access, browser control, and opaque external dependencies is rarely worth the tradeoff without strong containment.
Our installation checklist
Before we recommend that anyone install a skill, we want clear answers to the questions below.
- Verify provenance. OWASP's supply-chain guidance recommends using verifiable sources, integrity checks, and active supplier review. If the author, repository, release process, or documentation looks weak, stop there.
- Minimize extensions and permissions. OWASP's excessive-agency guidance is explicit: reduce extensions, reduce functionality, and reduce downstream privileges. If the task is read-only, the skill should not be able to write or delete.
- Avoid open-ended actions. Prefer narrow, purpose-built capabilities over generic shell execution, unrestricted browsing, or arbitrary URL fetches.
- Use a dedicated runtime. OpenClaw's own docs recommend dedicated OS users, hosts, and browser profiles for business-scoped agents, and specifically warn against mixing personal and company identities.
- Put human approval outside the model. Delete, send, post, purchase, and credential changes should require deterministic approval gates.
- Keep an inventory. NIST and Google SAIF both emphasize risk management as an ongoing operational discipline, not a one-time install decision.
- Patch quickly. If a supplier publishes a security fix, treat it like any other critical dependency and update on a defined schedule.
- Log what the skill can do and what it actually did. Monitoring does not prevent every issue, but it shortens discovery time and makes containment possible.
The governance mindset serious teams adopt
Google's Secure AI Framework and NIST's Generative AI Risk Management Profile both push toward the same conclusion: secure AI adoption is cross-functional. Security, engineering, privacy, compliance, and operations all need a say in how agentic systems are introduced and monitored.
In other words, the mature question is not 'Can this skill do the task?' It is 'Can this skill do the task inside the controls we are willing to defend?' That mindset is what turns TrustSkills from a scanner into a security decision layer.
